New York Uncovered with Liz Hamburg

There’s a very fun new shop on the Upper West Side called Make Meaning that is a do-it-yourself crafts store for both kids and adults. When I think of make your own crafts, I think of kind of an earthy-crunchy place. But Make Meaning is a very hip, fun space where you can make your own glass, ceramics, jewelry, soap or candles.  You can walk in and pay a daily fee to make an unlimited number of things or you can pay a lifetime membership fee.

There are also 100 professionally run classes scheduled every month. They offer Mommy and Me classes every morning at 10 and classes for the after-school crowd and then something they call the Make It After Dark classes in the evenings that are targeted to adults. Classes are around $20-$25.

They are expecting their liquor license soon, and hope to turn the evening crowd into a dating scene. There’s even going to be a DJ on weekend nights. The store is laid out by type of activity—you choose your own glass or beads or soap and then you choose the things to go in it or on it.

There is staff on hand to show you what to do and brightly colored tables to make your project.
When you are done for example laying out the glass or painting the ceramic, the staff will take it and finish it off. For glass, it takes four days to finish and you can either pick it up or they’ll send it to you. Some of the things would make great, personalized gifts.

There’s also a retail gift section and even a small café.

The space is perfect for parties. They have a loft space upstairs that seats up to 50 guests and there’s a fun downstairs rec room with colorful rubber floor mats that is perfect for a kids party.
You can walk in to browse or create something anytime, but they are encouraging reservations
To make something, you need to buy a Creativity Day Pass which is $12. They are offering annual membership for $36 per person or $149 for family membership. If you have a membership, then you just pay the cost of your piece. Membership includes a $25 credit toward one of the community classes.
Their new store just opened on Columbus Avenue last month. They also have a smaller store in FAO Schwarz.
